Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS) and Centers for Personalized Medicine (ZPM), one of Europe’s leading centers in personalized medicine, will intensify the collaboration between the two organizations under the joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU declares a joint ambition to advance precision medicine on a strategic, structural, and content-specific level in a supra-network established and developed by GMS and ZPM. ZPM and GMS share the same overarching goals to implement precision medicine in healthcare with equal access for patients throughout the country/region.

“We are delighted to strengthen our collaboration with one of the best centers for personalized medicine. This is a golden opportunity to get even more momentum in our work on implementing precision medicine broadly for equity of care for all patients in Sweden”, says Anders Edsjö, co-chair of GMS management team and co-chair for GMS Solid tumors.

The strategic partnership covers both specific topics of strategic and clinical relevance, including creating awareness for the field of precision medicine and identifying and advancing standardization and regulatory frameworks. Collaboration will to a start be focusing on solid tumors, hematological malignancies, rare diseases, microbiology, and complex diseases.

“Collaboration between precision medicine initiatives within so-called supra-network provides the ideal environment for training, facilitates the exchange of structural concepts, technologies and methods, and will provide the basis for joint research activities ranging from basic science to clinical trials that will benefit patients”, says Albrecht Stenzinger, spokesperson of the ZPM working group “Diagnostics” and head of the Center for Molecular Pathology Heidelberg, Germany.

After publishing the first joint overview article on precision medicine in Europe (Seminars in Cancer Biology, 2021 May 24; 10.1016/j.semcancer.2021.05.026), one of the next activities within the new collaboration will be the jointly initiated conference Cutting Edge Implementation of Precision Medicine in Europe in Stockholm in Stockholm on September 22-23, 2022.
